Don't look now, but jeeps are red hot and we can't seem to keep them in stock. This cj7 is very clean and straight, having been freshened a few years ago and given the right upgrades to make it fun to drive and great to look at. The vivid red paint seems right for a vehicle that's built purely for fun and given that it prefers to get dirty, it actually looks terrific. A big winch up front suggests go-anywhere capabilities and black rubber fender flares are probably mandatory with those giant meats. It's also got a set of modest steps, mesh headlight protectors, and a beefy spare tire rack big enough to carry one of those meaty goodyear tires without effort. This one sure looks the part. The interior is fairly stock, but someone went the extra mile to not only make it functional, but attractive as well. The high-back bucket seats are comfortable yet hose off at the end of a day on the trails and the heavy-duty spray-in bedliner on the floor is just pure genius. There's also a center console that provides some secure storage and this one includes an under-dash a/c system that's fully operational. The gauges look original, but they're actually very clever speedhut gps gauges that are more accurate but have an oem look. Someone spent a ton of money under the skin, starting with a freshly rebuilt 258 cubic inch inline-six that was completed in december 2016, about 1250 miles ago. Not necessarily built for all-out horsepower, the low-end torque it provides is ideal for crawling through the truly rough stuff. However, that's not to say it isn't quick, because on the streets this bright red jeep will get the drop on much faster hardware if they're not paying attention. A 4-speed manual transmission is linked to a 2-speed transfer case, and the original axles are fitted with a mild lift kit to give those big tires a little extra room. Some guys take their fun very seriously. Take the guy who built this 1981 jeep cj7 laredo, which carries a lot of off-road gear, a potent 350 cubic inch v8, and a long list of options including a/c. It's one of the nicer ones we've featured and it looks fantastic. The handsome black metallic paint job was finished not too long ago and it still looks remarkably good for an off-road vehicle. We worry about jeeps when they're this nice, because the new owner might be afraid to play in the dirt with it, and that would be a shame. So while it's clean and shiny, take a look at the straight bodywork, including all the reproduction laredo decals that still seem appropriate after all these years. Then there's the solid body tub, rubber flares over the giant tires, and the usual fold-down windshield and asymmetrical mirrors. Lots of chrome details, ranging from the grille surround to the front and rear bumpers, give it a lot of sparkle that will still show up when the jeep's out in the brush playing. Clearly someone did it right when they put this one together. Jeep interiors have always been about function over form, and for utilitarian good looks, they've perfected the formula. Clearly this one was intended for serious fun off-road, which explains the form-fitting front buckets. It's still got that hardcore jeep look that's 100% functional, but basic doesn't mean stripped, as there's spray-on bedliner material on the floor instead of the usual carpets and a powerful kenwood am/fm/cd stereo with speakers in the dash and big enclosures in back that actually sound pretty darned good. There's also under-dash a/c that remains fully functional, and the roll bars are neatly padded in gray vinyl that matches the upholstery. Jeep floor mats provide a modicum of protection for the floors and a bikini top does the same for the jeep's occupants. In 1981, nobody was making big horsepower, so the original engine in this jeep was jettisoned and replaced by a sweet-running 350 cubic inch chevrolet v8. With the usual upgrades including a 4-barrel carb and intake and a set of custom long-tube headers dumping into a side exhaust system, it has plenty of power to get this jeep just about anywhere. It also has a neat oem look and shows tidy workmanship throughout, although the a/c compressor and power steering pump seem to dominate the engine bay perched up high like they are. Inside, it's rugged and basic, with black vinyl besttop seats designed to be cleaned with a hose. Heavy-duty floor mats are there for the same reason, but that doesn't mean the cj is bereft of comfort and convenience features. It's all original and nicely maintained, and again there are signs that this jeep was not abused or neglected, and there's a lot of new stuff under the hood, including a fresh carburetor. Underneath, it's extremely solid with a stock 4-speed gearbox, 2-speed transfer case, and stout axles at both ends, all of which make this cj highly maneuverable in the brush. Nicely restored with a lot of new components, this is a trail-ready 4x4 with a lot to offer, including a very reasonable price. The burgundy paint is a lot nicer than what it was wearing originally, and the rich metallic finish looks great on the upright jeep bodywork. It's a few years old and this is a jeep, after all, so it's not perfect, but for a vehicle ostensibly designed to chase through the mud, it's pretty darned nice. The rockers and rear corners of the body have been appropriately reinforced with black diamond plate, giving the jeep a tough look that's also highly functional. The side steps were also added in 2014, so it's easier to climb aboard and a set of high-output kc lights were added up front. Few jeeps are this nicely equipped, this well-finished, and this thoughtfully built. The floors are covered with heavy duty rubber mats and the back seat looks like it might be original, or at least wearing an older seat cover. There's more black diamond plate on the dash, with updated knobs and handles, a correct speedometer with built in temperature and fuel gauges, and a pair of auxiliary gauges for voltage and oil pressure. Overhead there's a robust 6-point roll cage as well as a new soft top and doors that were installed just last year. Jeep's rugged and reliable 258 cubic inch inline-6 is the engine most cjs use and it's a great choice. Torquey and willing to just crawl along at little more than idle speed, it was built for situations just like this. It's mostly original and runs great, thanks to a rebuilt carburetor and new ignition components. It's not pretty and showy, but it's highly functional and doesn't' need any excuses. This jeep is equipped with both power steering and power brakes, which are welcome on a vehicle with oversized tires, and a custom tubular header feeds the exahust. A 4-speed manual transmission feeds a 2-speed transfer case, while the axles are filled with 3. 54/3. 55 gears so it's an easy highway cruiser. There are newer shocks underneath, a recent front driveshaft, and custom wheels with 32x11. 50-15 bfgoodrich mud terrain t/a radials that were installed in 2014.

The renegade was the top-of-the-line cj, a package that gave the utilitarian jeep a look-at-me makeover that's probably the off-road equivalent of the trans am screaming chicken hood decal. With a variety of off-road-ready upgrades, this one looks as rough and rugged as john wayne in a gun belt. Goodies include a chrome front bumper, new fender flares, and color-matched tubular steps for climbing aboard. This one sticks to the original setup, but the condition of the floors and dashboard suggest that this jeep has led a good life and hasn't been abused or neglected. High-back bucket seats are still comfortable enough for bouncing around off-road, and the floor has been protected with cool plastic liner, a smart upgrade and probably one that makes a lot of sense in a vehicle designed to play in the mud. The back seat is neatly finished in matching black vinyl and the padding on the roll bar is neatly fitted, so it's clean and orderly. The 4-speed manual feeds the stock 2-speed transfer case and seriously beefy axles at both ends, with the front end being fitted with locking hubs. Tall gears and low range give it rock-crawling stability, but thanks to the oversized tires, it can cruise relatively easily at highway speeds in high range. The suspension also features stock springs and ride height, so it's has exactly the right attitude and functionality without bei. Bucket Seats
